Are you new to the financial services industry and feeling a bit overwhelmed about the RE5 and/or RE1 exams? We’re here to help you kickstart your preparations with some valuable pointers.
Let’s begin by understanding the context of RE5 and RE1. The RE5 exam is for Representatives who provide financial advice to clients, while RE1 is for Key Individuals responsible for managing financial services providers diligently.
Now, why do you need to write these Regulatory Examinations? It’s all about ensuring the industry’s high standards and ethical practices. By passing these exams, you demonstrate your qualifications and experience, proving that you are equipped to offer exceptional financial advice. Plus, the RE certificate you receive upon successfully passing the exams will open doors for you to become a competent professional in the financial services industry.
Next, let’s address the common concern of where to write the Regulatory Examinations. In South Africa, Moonstone is the sole institution that offers these exams. You can easily book your exam venue and date on their website (www.moonstone.co.za).

I would like to write the RE1/RE5 exams, but I don’t know what follows from there. I am not currently working in the financial industry. Would that be a problem for a complete novice with zero experience in the industry?
Dear Kabelo
There are no prerequisites to write RE5 and RE1, however, the exams can be quite tricky for someone not in the industry and you will have to study hard to make sure you pass. You can register for the exams with Moonstone at http://www.moonstone.co.za.
Dear Kabelo in my possession I have RE 1 whenever I apply for a job they require RE5 what do I do?
Dear Thandeka,
According to Board Notice 194 of 2017, if you are a key individual who also provides advice, you are only required to complete RE1. However, if you’re just starting out, you’ll need RE5. You can sign up for our online RE5 training combo, and then register with Moonstone to take the exam.
Good luck!
